Is the Golden Dawn to Remain a Magickal Order?

by Hermetic Order of the Golden Dawn®
(EU OHIM reg 000063925)
Imperator David Griffin

Occult writer Aaron Leitch recently wrote on Facebook:

"Perhaps one could be a mystic without being a magician but I see no possible way for a real magician to not also be a mystic." -Aaron Leitch

Despite my having clarified the traditional Hermetic distinction between Magick and Mysticism in previous articles, there still remains tragic confusion among aspiring Magicians about differences between these  spiritual disciplines with distinct and diametrically opposed methods and goals.

All science grows in three main phases. These are (1) a common vocabulary, (2) correlation, and (3) effect-cause-effect. This means that every known science began by first establishing a common vocabulary that permitted its proponents to communicate. Without a clear definition of each term, conversations end up turning into arguments even when both sides are actually proclaiming the same truths.

Aristotle was quite adamant that we must always begin by clarifying our terms. Unfortunately, when important terms and concepts, such as “Magick” and “Mysticism” are used with imprecision, we end up fighting about something that isn’t really important.

Since Mr. Leitch does not define his terms, it is impossible to say what his statement actually means. It could mean anything. Mr. Leitch
appears to take a position fundamentally different than my own.

Mysticism and Magick traditionally represent two distinct spiritual paths - diametrically opposed in both methods and goals - according to definitions used for Centuries by the Hermetic and Magical traditions, including by luminaries such as Giordano Bruno, Marcilio Ficino, Cornelius Agrippa, Gerolamo Cardano, Pietro D'Abano, Theophrastus Paracelsus, and Eliphas Levi (not to mention the entirety of Egyptian, Chaldeaen, and Sumerian Magick).

Mr. Leitch's statement does make sense if Mysticism is redefined as but a synonym for "Gnosis" or "spiritual realisation," but the spiritual methodology used by traditional Mysticsm remains diametrically opposed to traditional methods of Golden Dawn Magick.

Is Mr. Leitch's apparent redefinition of Mysticism as merely Gnosis accidental or is it deliberate? There exist two well defined factions in today's Golden Dawn community. On the one hand, you have traditional Magickal orders. On the other hand, you have SRIA (Sociatas Rosicruciana) led Golden Dawn orders like Mr. Leitch's. SRIA in turn argues that the Rosicrucian tradition should be exclusively for Christians and has revived the schismatic G.D. order of A.E. Waite, who eliminated Golden Dawn Magick completely in favor of Christian Mysticism.

Immediately following the 1903 schism, William Butler Yeats wrote an article entitled "Is the Golden Dawn to remain a Magical order?"  Ever since, a chasm has emerged between those in the Golden Dawn community who gravitate more towards the spiritual methods of Christian Mysticism and those who gravitate more towards traditional Hermetic Magick. This has created fundamental differences between one Golden Dawn order and the other, which endure in our community even until today.

The foremost exponent of the Magical path in the Golden Dawn was the great Mage, S.L. MacGregor Mathers, who correctly understood Golden Dawn Hermeticism as a Magical rather than Mystical tradition. Over time, the Magical spiritual path has become more and more pronounced in the Magickal faction of the Golden Dawn community like our order, the European headquartered, Hermetic Order of the Golden Dawn®.

A.E. Waite
The foremost exponent of the Mystical Golden Dawn faction was Arthur Edward Waite, who rebelled against Mathers in the 1903 schism to create his Fellowship of the Rosy Cross. Waite completely replaced Golden Dawn Magick with Christian Mysticism. The polarity between Mystical Golden orders and traditional Magickal ones remains entrenched in our community even until today.

The primary difference between Magick and Mysticism lies codified in the actual methods of practice, together with the Mystical or Magical inclinations of the practitioner.

The Mystical path refers to the capacity and will of the practitioner to place oneself in a passive position in relationship to eternal Being and the forces of nature, which the Practitioner begins to invoke and pray to, so they may manifest and enlighten one, thus spiritually uplifting and exalting the practitioner.

The Magical practitioner, on the other hand, does not place him or herself in a passive state towards natural and Divine forces, but rather in a positive state. Recognizing the Divine Spark inside oneself, the practitioner actively collaborates with Eternal Being rather than waiting for its manifestations.

In Mysticism, the practitioner expects Divinity to manifest itself, and to ascend the staircase that leads from below to on high aided by the Divine hand that takes us and leads us ever upwards.

Magic does not expect this, instead conquering the Inner Planes through one's own effort rather than through Divine aid. Thus, whereas the Mystical approach is one of submission, the Magician instead is a conqueror.

A perfect example of the Magical path may be found in the Mithraic Ritual deposited in Paris, which shows one such practice of divine Ascension of the Magical initiate. While rising towards Divinity to be received like a prodigal Son or Daughter, the practitioner greets the Gods as equals that gradually appear, not fearing them or subjugating oneself before them, but admonishing them and blandishing them with Magical words that open the gates of heaven.

Whereas Magick is based on knowledge, Mysticism is based on on ignorance in the literal sense of "ignoring" or "unknowing." In fact, one of the most important mystical texts in all of Christianity, The Cloud of Unknowing, speaks of making oneself obscure, humble and ignorant before the unmanifest - to remain there, in silence, gradually emptying oneself, while waiting for something or someone (God) to come and fill the void thus created.

Thus two completely different modalities become evident. Whereas the Mystic reflects the Divine light that is poured out upon him, the Magician generates this light, becoming an emitter himself.

I fully support diversity in our community. There is nothing wrong with Mystical Golden Dawn orders. There are many people, after all, who are more suited for the methods of traditional Mysticism than of Magick. For such aspirants, a Mystical Golden Dawn order could be a good choice.

Any misrepresentation of methods from traditional Mysticism as Magick is unethical. Golden Dawn Magick has its own, excellent spiritual methods. When it comes to something as important as people's spiritual development, they deserve informed choices based on reliable information. It is not fair to promise aspirants Magick, then deliver Mysticism instead.

Whereas Mystical Golden Dawn orders are a welcome addition to our community, they need to be honest and transparent about the spiritual methods they actually teach. Here at the European headquartered Hermetic Order of the Golden Dawn®, we will always remain a Magickal order. Our entire mission is to make Magicians.

I am not saying we are the "best" Golden Dawn order - only that there are important differences.

Egyptian Isinian Mysteries: The Subtle Bodies and the Four Worlds

by Alpha Omega Imperator
David Griffin
On the Golden Dawn Forum (HERE), Jordan recently asked:
"Hello all, I am a novice and beginning student of comparative theology. I have been studying alchemy lately and read somewhere that all of the metals referenced in alchemical text are actually metaphors for different types of subtle bodies. Such as:
 (Lead represents the material body)
(Quicksilver represents the etheric body)
(Gold represents the solar body)
(Silver represents the ??????? body)
Can anyone enlighten me on this or is this a secret I have to be initiated into the group to find out?"
Thanks
Jordan
Dear Jordan,

I have both a short answer and a long one. The short answer is:

Lead (Saturn) is the metal corresponding to the physical body, ruled by Saturn/Chronos, Lord of Time
Silver (Moon) is the metal corresponding to the lunar body, fully active in the world of dreams - ruled by the Moon.
Quicksilver (Mercury) is the mental body and the realm of ideas.
Gold (Sun) is the Solar Body, the body active in the stellar realm, the universe inside light.
Thus we can understand how the Rosicrucian Magic of the Golden Dawn works first with the energies of the Elements on our planet, then evolves out through the planets of our solar system to the stars.

As for the long answer, let us first recall that although the Alpha Omega remains a traditional Golden Dawn order. The AO also operates a separate, purely Egyptian section.

For those educated in Kemetic tradition who may assert the below is incomplete, note that what I give is extremely simplified. Human kind and the universe should always be considered as single being, containing within itself the four elements that compose everything. I give below the simplest terms without going into detail into the explanation of the elements of the composition of the soul/universe, known to the Egyptians as the Ba, Sheut, Khaibit, etc. Additional information and practices are available to A.Ω. members.

1. The Sekhu or Khat - "The Body that Devours." (Physical Body of Saturnian Body (ruled by time) The Sekhu or Khat is the physical Body that lives and dies, eats, devours, renews, reproduces, etc. It is a sensitive and dense body containing meat, bones, corneous tissue, etc. It is also matter that it is created, serves its function, then transforms. It is physical matter that we can touch and see and perceive with ours five senses.
Color: Black
Element: Earth
Characteristics: Stimuli, such hunger, thirst, sleepiness, concupiscence. Physical sensations (warm; cold, pain, pleasure, fatigue, vigor, etc.)

2. The Ka - "The Body that Feels" (Astral Body, Lunar Body) The Ka is a subtle body composed of magnetism and vital energy. The Ka derives from the Sekhu or Khat like the Moon reflects the light of the Sun. The Ka is a more subtle body emanating from first and constituting its denser sensibility – nerves, nerve centers, the brain, etc. In the created world, the Ka is also magnetic and electrical energy. Subtle matter, magnetism and electricity, odic force, also called Astral Light.
Element: Water
Color: Green
Characteristics: Sensory impressions; instincts, conscience, moral pain, feelings and passions (fear, courage, euphoria, depression, insecurity, love, hatred; goodness; badness, etc.). Sense of order or tendency to disorder. Desires; aspirations; attachments, etc.

3. The Ba - "The Body that Thinks." (Mental Body, Mercurial Body) The Ba is a more complete individuality emanating from the preceding two bodies. The Ba is mentality or the Mental body, winged at both the head and feet. The Ba is the constituent part of the human being most in contact with the Divine. The Ba is the most subtle, or thinking aspect of the human being.
The Ba represents the directing principle of the Universe and of matter. Today we may better understand this considering Quantum physics and Quantum mind. The Ba represents the subtle forces underlying universal creation.
Element: Air
Color: Light Blue
Characteristics: Intelligence and will, intuition, thought, creation, spiritual love, neutrality, truth, directing and willed concrete ideas, sense of freedom, premonition and precognition, dominion over the Astral body and thus over the physical body as well.

4. The Akh, Khu, or Sahu - "The Body of Light" or "Divine Spark" (Solar Body, also called Diving Genius in the Golden Dawn). The Akh, Khu, or Sahu represents Divine individuality, which manifest in the human being by virtue of the Ba, which in its turn manifests through the Ka, and this through the Sekhu or Khat. The Akh, Khu, or Sahu participates in universal life, unique and eternal. It is the source of vitality, both physical and spiritual. It is the light of eternal consciousness, beyond space and time.
Element: Fire
Color: Brilliant Red
Characteristics: There is not point in listing characteristics of the Akh. This must be lived through experience as it is beyond mind and intellect. I add only the following quote from the Adept Fulcanelli:
"As long as fire exists, matter will not cease in its arduous ascent towards the integral purity; passing solid form (earth) to liquid form (water), and then to the gaseous state (air) and then to a radiant state (fire). As long a fire shall exist, human beings will be able to exercise their industrious activity on the things that surround them and, thanks to this wonderful igneous instrument, will be able to submit them to their own will, to mold them, to subject them their own purposes. As long a fire shall endure, human beings shall be human beings in will be directed relationship with the Divine - and the creature shall better know its Creator."

Let us recall, in conclusion, that the above Egyptian model exists only to better and more concretely understand the human Soul. It does not mean that this division literally exists in human beings. Who asserts this acts like a child who believes in fairy tales, for these four bodies completely interpenetrate one another and every cell of the physical human body contains the other three bodies not only within each cell, but also within each molecule and every atom.

SATANISM & SRIA 1: "Christian" Leaders Obsessed with Magick and the Occult?

SRIA Supreme Magus, John R.Paternoster

Rumors have circulated since 2005 of a "Satanist coup" at the highest levels of leadership of the Societas Rosicruciana in Anglia (S.R.I.A.).

As a Pagan, the entire discussion seems quite superfluous at first glance. Considering, however, that present S.R.I.A. leaders have already co-opted numerous G.D. leaders in our community, effectively bringing entire orders under their dominion, Golden Dawn members of all faiths have reason to be concerned.

S.R.I.A. leaders teach a segregationist, "Trinitarian Christians only" view of the Rosicrucian tradition and argue even that the Golden Dawn is "Christian" (See Peregrin Wildoak's argument here). The only way to properly evaluate S.R.I.A.'s 2005 "Satanist coup" schism, therefore, is through a Trinitarian Christian lens.

What is certain is that there was a mass exodus of S.R.I.A. members surrounding a controversial change in leadership when dentist, John R. Paternoster, seized power as S.R.I.A.'s Supreme Magus. The Society did their best to keep the affair quiet, including an alleged cover-up at the highest levels of S.R.I.A. Nonetheless, a certain amount of information did eventually surface on the Internet. For example, "Zac" wrote here in 2006:
"The Societas Rosicruciana in Anglia, known in the Masonic world as the SRIA, has been taken over secretly by those adhering to Satanism.

The Society is presently led by Fra. John R. Paternoster, a dentist from Bishops Stortford in Hertfordshire, who was elected by some of the ruling members of the SRIA in dubious circumstances early in September 2005. But what most members of the Society do not know is that he has been writing regularly for The Oracle – Occult Magazine which is published in London every three months. On the publishers’ website it is claimed to be a serious journal examining the supernatural.

One of Fra. Paternoster’s first acts on taking up control as Supreme Magus was to appoint another adherent of Satanism, Fra. ‘Mike’ Crowson, to be the Director-General of Studies for the whole Society. He has been advertising his occult practices (based in London) and his connections with fringe groups in The Oracle for some time. He is also the webmaster for the publishers. He claims to be a Christian but refuses to affirm in public any belief in the Trinitarian Christian faith...

...The latest issues of The Oracle are entirely devoted to devil worship, witchcraft, the Black Mass and other similarly obscene topics. They also contain explicit drawings about masturbation and swearing. Fra. Paternoster has written articles for both issues as the ‘Supreme Magus’ of the Society. That is stated quite clearly in print. So the name of the SRIA and therefore of English freemasons generally has been clearly connected with this occult magazine.

Copies of these magazines were received last month by the Grand Secretaries of the United Grand Lodge of England (in Great Queen Street), The Supreme Council 33° (in Duke Street) and the Grand Lodge of Mark Masons (in St James’ Street). So the leaders of English Freemasonry have known about this Satanic involvement at the top of the SRIA for some time.

At 2.00 pm on Wednesday 22 February 2006 the General Purposes Committee of the SRIA met in emergency session at the Society’s London headquarters in Hampstead in the presence of Fra. Paternoster and Fra. Crowson. Most of the Committee are appointees of Fra. Paternoster.

They met to consider several formal complaints against this occult involvement of their leader and his close associate which had been received from other senior Fratres from various parts of the world. Fra. Paternoster, in writing his articles in The Oracle, has been fully supported by the Society’s Deputy Chaplain-General, a non-ordained senior London freemason, Fra. Arthur Craddock, who is also a Past Grand Steward of the United Grand Lodge of England.

However, what is not generally known is that a few members of the Committee met secretly in ‘The Flask’, a pub just off the Hampstead High Street, before the official start of the scheduled meeting. Later on at the Committee meeting one of these, Fra. Ronald Pike – the Superior of the Order of Essenes and the Chaplain-General of the SRIA – produced a draft hand-written statement setting out the route which they wanted the rest of the Committee to take. So a cover-up had been arranged even before the Committee met formally.

After only about one hour’s discussion and according to the official circulated Minutes, the Committee decided by a vote of only 6 with three abstentions - hardly surprisingly in the circumstances considering who appointed them - ‘that, for the good of the Society, the less said about this the better’ and ‘expressed the view that, in view of the number of resignations that have already taken place, more would cause confusion, particularly among our younger members, which should be avoided at all costs’ – which is just the sort of cover-up which the Church itself has been accused of in the past.

At the time the Committee had been made aware that the SRIA is known on the internet, for example in Yahoo chat-rooms, as being involved by its ‘Supreme Magus’ with The Oracle – Occult Magazine. Even so they instructed the Secretary-General to circulate their amazingly arrogant decision to all members thereby hoping that this covert intrusion by those adhering to Satanism will be covered up.

But if these leading Fratres know about this appalling infection at the top of the Society, then perhaps others – including ordinary Christian members like yourself should know about it too."
The involvement of S.R.I.A. Supreme Magus, John Paternoster, in the "Oracle Occult Magazine" is easily verified on the Oracle's MySpace page here (The titles of the other articles are quite revealing concerning the above allegations of Satanism).

I already pointed out last week the absurdity of Trinitarian Christian S.R.I.A. leaders and their G.D. puppets arguing that the Golden Dawn is a "Christian" tradition. It should be quite obvious that the Golden Dawn is Non-sectarian, not Christian. The Golden Dawn is a MAGICAL order and Magick has been at all times condemned by Christianity in no uncertain terms.

Unsurprisingly, no S.R.I.A. leader nor any Golden Dawn leader under their dominion has had anything at all to say in defense of their original argument. This is because there is nothing they can say, since there is no rational explanation for Trinitarian Christians to be so obsessed with Magick and Magical orders. To put it simply ...

"Their silence is deafening!"

Instead, as a diversionary tactic, a host of leaders of S.R.I.A. licensed or affiliated Golden Dawn orders, published a barrage of articles (by Donald Michael KraigPeregrin WildoakNick FarrellAaron Leitch, and Morgan Eckstein), each arguing in favor of using Magick for making money and other material gain.

As a Pagan, I have nothing at all against practical Magick.  In fact, I revealed the keys to unlock the entire Golden Dawn system for practical Magick in Chapter 6 of the Ritual Magick Manual. (As a purely technical matter, I do always make clear that spiritual development proceeds faster if a Magician focuses on Magick purely for energetic evolution rather than for material gain, however).

But what about the Trinitarian Christian, present S.R.I.A. leaders' obsession with Magical Golden Dawn orders?
"According to Trinitarian Christianity, the practice of Witchcraft and Magick are regarded as Sins that need to be repented of, confessed, and forsaken."
Anyone who approaches ANY of the “Christian” denominations and asks if that particular group would allow for ANY form of Magick to be performed as part of an approach to Jesus as God, they would be denied.

If no Christian denomination (including the Anglican church most S.R.I.A. members belong to) will permit Magick to be practiced within the canon of their teachings, then why are S.R.I.A. leaders so obsessed with controlling MAGICAL Golden Dawn orders?

After all:
  • The Christian Bible is filled with injunctions against Magick. For example:
  • The struggle between St. Peter and the Magician, Simon Magus.
  • Leviticus and Deuteronomy prohibit certain kinds of Magick, specifically divination, seeking omens, mediums who commune with the dead, and spell-casters.
  • Exodus 22:18 states: "Do not allow a sorceress to live".
  • Galatians includes sorcery in a list of "works of the flesh".
  • This ban is repeated in the Didache, written during the mid to late first century.
  • Martin Luther shared some of the views about witchcraft that were common in his time. In his Small Catechism Luther taught that Magick was a sin against the second commandment.
  • The Rituale Romanum De Sacramento Paenitantiae specifically lists Magick and Astrology as mortal sins, and illucidates the following for grounds for excommunication from the Church: "Who adheres to Magical beliefs such as the Magic of Cartomancy, Astrology, and all esoteric practices or who converts to other faiths such as Masonry or Rosicrucianism.
Evangelical Christian groups, likewise condemn Magick, Numerous Christian groups even go so far as to condemn ANY form of Magick as Satanism

What would these Christian groups say about people who try to control esoteric orders that teach Magick or even those who advocate Magick for money and material gain?

Are these not Satanists when viewed through a Trinitarian Christian lens?

As Trinitarian Christians, the efforts by current S.R.I.A. leaders to bring Magical Golden Dawn orders under their dominion through trademark licensing and co-opting G.D. leaders makes no sense at all.

Trinitarian Christians condemn Magick, not practice it or teach it.

On the other hand, if the above rumors are true - and S.R.I.A. leadership was indeed toppled by Satanists as rumored in 2005, then the obsession of today's S.R.I.A. leaders with Magick, the Occult, and the Golden Dawn suddenly all makes perfect sense.

At least one thing is certain - Rank and file members of S.R.I.A. deserve some real answers to tough questions!

SPECIAL REPORT: 2013 International Golden Dawn Festival & The Rites of Isis

by HPS Leslie McQuade Griffin

High Priestess - Egyptian Section
Hermetic Order of the Golden Dawn,
Rosicruican Order of Alpha Omega

Leslie and David McQuade Griffin Reveal Secret Chiefs' Magick

The International Festival of Golden Dawn Magicians brought together Solitary Practitioners, Self-Initiates, and Members from a host of G.D. orders for a week of good food, great times and amazing Magick - newly released by the Golden Dawn’s Secret Chiefs.  The time away from the mundane world was like a breath of fresh air and reminded us of why we call The Golden Dawn home.

In short - it was a great Festival.  In fact, it was the kind of event that gets me excited about holding another one next year.  Many important things happened for the participants. One of the most important was getting acclimated to Temple Life.  There is a rhythm there that, if you can carry it home with you to your personal Temple, really gives increased depth to your Magickal work.

It seems simple, but often times, it is in simplicity that profound truth is hidden in plain sight.
  1. Meditation - Beginning with the old 1888 Neophyte Meditaion (version 1.0), then concluding later in the week with version 2.0 revealed by the Secret Chiefs at the Festival.
  2. Breakfast - The international participants (8 countries and spanning 4 continents!) went home with a new appreciation for the tradition of a big American style breakfast. Next …
  3. Cleaning - Breakfast can be messy; fried eggs, fried potatoes, fried pancakes, and coffee dribbling from cups held a little too loosely. But not just the kitchen. Cleaning the whole house in the morning is an exercise in purification and in re-creating sacred space. Done every day, it becomes less a chore and more a magical exercise in and of itself. And then …
  4. Physical Exercise - Not a lot, nothing too strenuous. I learned about the importance of morning exercises for team building when I worked at an archaeological dig in Japan. I incorporated some of those exercises into our morning routine. And after physical warm up ...
  5. Spiritual Exercise - Warm up exercises with a modern approach to Magick in Golden Dawn Dojo led by David Griffin. Then…
  6. Class - This was the meat and potatoes of the week (depicted above). The Secret Chiefs revealed and David taught a great deal of the magical formulae and spiritual practices hidden in the Golden Dawn Neophyte grade. This is also where the Secret Chiefs revealed and I taught the Egyptian Magick hidden in the Mathers' "Rites of Isis."
  7. Processing and Journaling - After class, time to perfect class notes, ask questions and rest a little before lunch. Unless you were on the lunch crew, that is.
  8. Lunch - Cook, eat, socialize, clean again and (ahhhh) ...
  9. Repose and Meditation. An opportunity to go inward once again.
  10. Initiation - In the afternoon, after repose, came the opportunity for Traditional Golden Dawn Initiations for Self-initiates, Solitary Practitioners and G.D. Members. Those not involved in the afternoon’s initiatic work had free time to explore the Temple grounds, nature in the surrounding countryside, and the numerous attractions that surround Pahrump.
  11. Dinner - Cook, eat, socialize, clean for the last time and then ...
  12. Fire Circle - This was a relaxing and fitting tribal end to our day.
Regarding local attractions, Tecopa Hot Springs was a favorite yet again this year. The hot, geothermal pools, filled with healing mineral salts soak away stress and sore muscles better than any Jacuzzi. And the cosmetic grade mud at the bottom really completes this natural spa experience. Add good friends and intelligent conversation, and the experience at “Hot Ditch” is one not easily forgotten.

David and Leslie at Tecopa Hot Springs

That is not to say that the Festival was without the inevitable “mosquito in Paradise”, as it were.  Although the “Hot Ditch” is amazing, it would really have been nice to have had the 20 person capacity Jacuzzi working, since it was only 15 feet from the back door, and not the 45 minute drive Tecopa is. It was quite frustrating for David and I that one obstacle after the other kept the new Jacuzzi down until just after the Festival ended (of course). Well, there is always next year.

Fire Circle was the perfect ending for the day each evening. Nothing says relaxation and contentment like sitting around a campfire. Fires are a little too easy to build in the desert, so the usual hassle of actually getting the thing started was replaced with a sense of wonder. It really takes no great talent to have the mythic “one match fire” when the humidity stays below 25% year in and year out.

We gazed dreamily at first the fire, then the stars, then back at the fire. We sipped our drinks, and listened to the sounds of nature, dying down after a hard day’s work, then to peacocks from a neighbor’s farm, then to frogs, and finally to the drums.

There were several drummers in attendance. Wherever there is a fire, drummers and fire spinners happily join in what easily becomes a complete tribal experience. As we pounded out familiar rhythms, a synergy quickly developed. No two fire circles are ever the same, and the bonds formed at one have a different flavor than at others. Yes, fire circle was definitely a great way to end the day.

As far as class work is concerned, the Magick of the Rites of Isis comprise the Egyptian Section of the new material supplied by the Secret Chiefs. It was such a joy for me to impart these new teachings on such attentive and capable persons.

The importance of the Rites of Isis to the Alpha Omega is crucial to the completion of the Egyptian mysteries of the Golden Dawn. The Egyptian lunar “Rites of Isis” performed by Moina and S.L. MacGregor Mathers in public at the Theatre Bodiniere, in March 1899, in Paris was just the beginning.

In reality, the Mathers’ Rites of Isis were just the first step of a whole system of secret Egyptian Magick now released to the A.O. by the Secret Chiefs, and introduced for the first time at the International Festival.

Speaking of Alpha Omega public rites, there are also the complementary “Rites of Nephthys” (Lunar Rites for the New Moon) as well as the Rite of the Grand Enthronement of Isis. The secret magical formulae of the Grand Enthronement of Isis serve to invoke and manifest the energies of the Goddess, fully manifesting the egregore of the Isinian mysteries and embodying it in the Rosicrucian Order of Alpha Omega as well as in Isis Temple.

Each of these Rites were performed publicly during the Festival. I am deeply honored to have filled shoes in ritual once occupied by Moina Mathers, now our honored A.O. elder, and to serve today as High Priestess of the Alpha Omega’s Isis Temple.

Sincerely,
HPS Leslie McQuade Griffin

Dark Night Mystic - or Golden Dawn Magician?

by Golden Dawn Imperator
David Griffin

Over the past month or so, there has been a fascinating discussion, which has gone far to clarify the differences between the goals and methods used by various Golden Dawn orders. The discussion centers around the very real differences between the Magical spiritual path and the Mystical spiritual path.

I won’t bother with the last two phases as they are not relevant to this discussion.

Despite having attempted to clarify the distinction between Magick and Mysticism in two previous articles, there nonetheless remains a tragic amount of confusion among aspiring Magicians about the actual differences between Mysticism and Magick. As long as leaders of our community continue to use the words "Mysticism" and "Magick" interchangeably, instead of as representing two distinct, spiritual paths that are diametrically opposed in both their methods and their goals, we should not be surprised by continued confusion among our students.

The discussion began when Peregrin Wildoak HERE wrote:
"In the first Order we purge or purify our personality selves, allowing them to be loose and clearer enough to handle the Illumination we generate via our magical practices in the second Order. This second Order magical work illuminates us enough that, eventually, we become who we are and realise (not just know) we are actually the One, and thereby we experience Theosis in the third Order."
Peregrin above perfectly outlines the Christian Mystical approach to the Golden Dawn that found its finest expression in A.E. Waite's Fellowship of the Rosy Cross. It does not reflect, however, the methodology of the traditional Golden Dawn.

Immediately following the 1903 schism, William Butler Yeats wrote an article entitled "Is the Golden Dawn to remain a Magical order?" Ever since, a chasm has emerged between those orders in the Golden Dawn community who gravitate more towards Mysticism and those who gravitate more towards Magick. This has created fundamental differences between one Golden Dawn order and the other, which endure in our Golden Dawn community even until today.

Since these fundamental differences are not so easily recognized by aspirants or by an unwary public, it has become rather urgent to clarify them. In short, it is high time that Christian Mysticism no longer be confused and conflated with Hermetic Magick.

This was further underscored when Donald Michael Kraig recently wrote an article entitled "Dark Night of the Soul" on the Llewellyn blog, in which Kraig equated the "Dark Night" of the Christian Mystical spiritual path of St. John of the Cross with the Golden Dawn's "Crossing of the Abyss," which derives from diametrically opposite Magical path of the Hermetic tradition. You can read Frater Kraig's entire article HERE.

Those who have followed this discussion will understand my frustration that the debate appears not to have progressed, despite my having already addressed these issues in two previous articles (HERE) and (HERE).

Instead, this time it was Nick Farrell who today published a new article (HERE), again entitled "Dark Night of the Soul," yet again using the terms "Mysticism" and "Magick" interchangeably (as did previously both Kraig and Wildoak) as though these two terms were synonyms describing a single spiritual path and methodology.

What each of the above referenced articles have in common is that Fratres Kraig, Wildoak, and Farrell each describe a spiritual path whose aims and methodology closely resemble the Christian Mysticism of A.E. Waite, as distinct from the aims and methods of the spiritual path of Hermetic Magick used by the traditional Golden Dawn.

From the perspective of the Hermetic and Magical traditions, including luminaries such as Giordano Bruno, Marcilio Ficino, Cornelius Agrippa, Gerolamo Cardano, Pietro D'Abano, Theophrastus Paracelsus, and Eliphas Levi (not to mention the entirety of Egyptian, Chaldeaen, and Sumerian Magick), the goals and methods that Kraig, Farrell, and Wildoak each describe in the above referenced articles are not those of Magick at all, but purely those of Mysticism.

Please do not misunderstand me. I am not saying that there is anything wrong with Mysticism as a traditional spiritual path. Mysticism is a great path and even the right or the only path for some people. It is however, diametrically opposed to the traditional Magical spiritual path in both its goals and its methods.

I am also not saying that modern Golden Dawn orders must remain static as the Golden Dawn was in 1888. It is natural that most Golden Dawn orders have evolved in a Mystical direction and have adopted many of the the aims and methods of Waite's Christian Mystical, "Fellowship of the Rosy Cross."

Nonetheless, Mysticism and Magick remain two quite distinct and separate spiritual paths. The primary difference between Magick and Mysticism lies codified in the actual methods of practice, together with the Mystical or Magical inclinations of the practitioner.

Whereas the Mystic seeks union with the Divine without, through subordination or "loosening" of the ego, Magicians instead are conquerors of the ramparts of heaven. Magicians seek not union with any sort of Divinity outside themselves. They seek rather to liberate from the chains of matter the "Divine spark" that lies hidden within each human being.

Magick does not expect this, instead conquering the Inner Planes through one's own effort rather than through Divine aid. Thus, whereas the Mystical approach is one of submission, the Magician instead is a conquerer.

Whereas Magick is based on knowledge, Mysticism is based on ignorance in the literal sense of "ignoring" or "unknowing." In fact, one of the most important mystical texts in all of Christianity, "The Cloud of Unknowing," speaks of making oneself obscure, humble and ignorant before the unmanifest - to remain there, in silence, gradually emptying oneself, while waiting for something or someone (God) to come and fill the void thus created.

Thus two completely different modalities become evident. Whereas the Mystic reflects the Divine light that is poured out upon him, the Magician generates this light, becoming an emitter himself.

A.E. Waite
The foremost exponent of the Mystical path in the Golden Dawn was Arthur Edward Waite, who completely suppressed Magick in favor of Christian Mysticism in his Fellowship of the Rosy Cross and its Inner Order, the Rosae Rubeae et Aureae Crucis, Rectified Rite. Waite's Fellowship of the Rosy Cross, reconstructed in recent years and open only to Christians, today remains the most Mystical order in the Golden Dawn community.

The foremost exponent of the Magical path in the Golden Dawn was the great Mage, S.L. MacGregor Mathers. Mathers understood that the Golden Dawn primarily as a Magical rather than a Mystical tradition. Over time the Magical spiritual path has become more and more pronounced in Mathers' Alpha Omega. The A.O. today therefore remains the most Magical order in the Golden Dawn community.

In between the Alpha Omega and the Fellowship of the Rosy Cross, which most clearly exemplify the diametrically opposed Magical and Mystical Golden Dawn paths, there today exist a host of Golden Dawn orders that lie somewhere in between ... that have not gone so far as to suppress Magick outright as did the Waite order, yet nonetheless remain quite Mystical in their approach to the Golden Dawn, as is clearly evident in the above referenced articles written by Donald Michael Kraig, Peregrin Wildoak, and Nick Farrell.

One type of order in today's Golden Dawn community is rooted in Mysticism, uses methods like those set forth in "The Cloud of Unknowing" (purgations, humility, "loosening the ego" and waiting for illumination to come from outside/on high), and draws on Mystical experiences like the "Dark Night of the Soul" of St. John of the Cross, like we have seen in the above writings of Donald Michael Kraig, Nick Farrell, and Peregrin Wildoak.

The other type of Golden Dawn order is that of the Hermetic, purely Magical spiritual path, as taught and practiced in the Alpha Omega, which proceeds instead through spiritual exaltation, and holds the Hermetic philosophical position that every human being contains a Divine spark of the One, which is the entire Universe.

Whereas the goals of what remains of "Magick" in most Golden Dawn orders today has become deviated by Mysticism; with passive methods, and self-negating aims (full of purgation, ego loosening, etc.) ...

... the Hermetic Magick of the Alpha Omega remains positive, active, and life-affirming. Recognizing the Divine Spark inside oneself, the Magical spiritual path actively collaborates with Eternal Being, rather than waiting for its manifestations.

Whereas Mysticism is passive and seeks illumination bestowed through grace from an outside Divinity, Magick is live-giving and self-illuminating, kindling the Divine spark present inside every Magician.

The wonderful thing about today's Golden Dawn community is that our diversity gives spiritual aspirants a plethora of choices. Aspiring Mystics will find their spiritual quest greatly facilitated in one of the Mystical Golden Dawn orders, where they will find all of the purgation and ego loosening they need to eventually attain Mystical illumination.

Thus people seeking a Mystical spiritual path are best joining either the Christian Mystical, Fellowship of the Rosy Cross, founded by A.E. Waite, or one of the Golden Dawn orders led by Donald Michael Kraig, Peregrin Wildoak, or Nick Farrell (at least judging by the mystical goals and methods they each teach on their blogs).

Aspiring Magicians, on the other hand, will find all of the training, support, and guidance you need - in all aspects of the Magical spiritual path, immediately upon entering the outer order of the Rosicrucian Order of Alpha Omega, the Hermetic Order of the Golden Dawn.

Again, I am not saying the Alpha Omega is the "best" Golden Dawn order. However, our goals and our methods are very different than most other G.D. orders. For example, it goes without saying that in the European headquartered Golden Dawn - we do NOT make Mystics ...
